For years, Meghan Markle's bitter estrangement from her father has fueled headlines, accusations and endless speculation. Now, as Thomas Markle Sr. faces an investigation over alleged possession of child sexual abuse images, the Duchess of Sussex has revealed what she says was the real reason she kept him away from her children: "to protect them."
In an extraordinary statement shared with PEOPLE magazine Friday, Meghan, 45, broke her silence on the explosive allegations against her 82-year-old father, revealing that she had been aware of disturbing accusations against him as far back as 2018, the year she married Prince Harry. "I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours," Meghan said, adding that her thoughts were with any children who might have been harmed.
According to the duchess, a letter containing serious allegations against her father was sent in 2018 to London's Metropolitan Police and the unit responsible for protecting members of the royal family and other high-profile individuals. The letter was subsequently shared with Meghan, who said she was assured the allegations were being investigated. She described the claims as "troubling and disturbing."
Meghan also took aim at media outlets that had portrayed her years-long estrangement from her father as a family feud, insisting that her decision to prevent him from having contact with her and Harry's children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, was motivated by their safety.
The duchess said she had trusted the authorities to protect other families as well. She expressed horror at the latest allegations and called for justice, emphasizing that "the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children."
Her statement came hours after reports emerged that her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., 60, had reported their father to police after allegedly discovering hundreds, possibly thousands, of images and videos depicting child sexual abuse among belongings left at his former home in Cebu, in the Philippines.
According to Britain's The Sun, Thomas Jr. said he discovered the suspected material in four large storage boxes. He also alleged that his father's desktop computer contained extensive collections of disturbing images and that a cellphone held a 15-minute video involving young girls. One photograph, he claimed, appeared to have been taken inside his father's former home in Mexico. The allegations have not been independently established.
Thomas Jr., who had helped care for his father following serious health problems, said the discovery left him horrified. He reported the alleged material to Philippine authorities and said he also contacted the FBI and American child protection organizations. He has declared that he will no longer speak to his father unless called to testify against him.
Philippine Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty confirmed to Reuters on Friday that the country's anti-trafficking task force in Cebu was investigating the matter. The allegations remain unproven.
Thomas Markle Sr. has vehemently denied wrongdoing. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he described his son's accusations as "sick lies" and insisted he had never downloaded such material. He said he was shocked and deeply hurt that his son had made the allegations, accusing him of trying to destroy his reputation.
But the family drama did not end there. Meghan's half-sister, Samantha Markle, 61, rushed to their father's defense, accusing Thomas Jr. of fabricating the allegations for financial gain.
"There is no merit in these disgusting allegations whatsoever," Samantha told the Daily Mail, adding: "He wants to destroy our dad."
Samantha alleged that her brother had relied on their father financially for years, treating him as a "cash cow," and claimed he began making accusations after that financial support ended. She also questioned whether the alleged material could be connected to their father, arguing that the computers in question had been outside his possession for an extended period and could have been tampered with. Her allegations about her brother's motives have not been independently verified.
Meghan is Thomas Markle Sr.'s only child with her mother, Doria Ragland. Thomas Jr. and Samantha are his children from his first marriage to Roslyn Loveless. Relations between Meghan and her father broke down in the run-up to her 2018 wedding, after he admitted staging paparazzi photographs. He ultimately missed the ceremony, and the two have remained estranged.
The latest revelations have cast that long-running family drama in a dramatically different light. While Meghan says she was protecting her children from allegations she learned about years ago, her brother is accusing their father of serious wrongdoing, her sister is accusing their brother of lying for money, and their father insists the entire story is false.
For the authorities investigating in the Philippines, the question now is whether the alleged material can be authenticated and traced to anyone responsible. For the Markle family, an already bitter public feud has entered its most disturbing chapter yet.
