Margot Robbie is today’s most successful Australian export to Hollywood, no small feat given the fierce competition for that title. She is the most beautiful, the blondest, the most glamorous. At 35, she has already earned three Oscar nominations, four Golden Globe nominations and seven BAFTA nominations. She has yet to win one of the major awards, but even without them, she is unquestionably one of the busiest and most respected actors in American cinema.
Her breakout role came in 2013 with “The Wolf of Wall Street” opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Since then, she has risen fast and high, consistently choosing her co-stars from the “sexiest men alive” list: Ryan Gosling, Colin Farrell, Will Smith, Alexander Skarsgård and Brad Pitt.
Her road to the top
Like her on-screen counterpart Barbie, Robbie is far more than a pretty face — though in her case, it is a face so striking it is hard to look away. She is also a strong actor with impeccable fashion sense and a remarkable ability to remain untarnished. In an industry that often sends its stars down paths of rehab centers, embarrassing paparazzi moments and public feuds, Robbie manages to maintain a clean, almost flawless image that has become increasingly rare.
She has been married for nearly a decade to a British producer she met when he was an assistant director, and the couple welcomed a son last year. Beyond that, her backstory includes childhood circus acrobatics training and an unabashed love for the “Harry Potter” films — nothing likely to excite any gossip columnist.
Robbie's latest film is “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” which early reviews and box office numbers suggest is a small and unnecessary journey that hardly justifies leaving the house. Soon she will co-star in a highly anticipated adaptation of “Wuthering Heights,” sharing the screen with another Australian, Jacob Elordi, perhaps the only compatriot who can match her in beauty, style and sex appeal.
The packed schedule of events for both films has given her ample opportunity to shine on red carpets and at premieres. And as always, Robbie gives her all at every appearance — or the bare minimum, depending on how one counts skin exposure.
How she dresses
Her red-carpet style is a blend of the two fictional characters most associated with her: Barbie and Harley Quinn. One is a candy-colored doll; the other a provocative antihero. Between these two poles, with a clear preference for maximum skin on display — front, back and sometimes both — she shifts her fashion choices with confidence.
Robbie has always been a red-carpet star, fully in command of what to wear when cameras flash. But “Barbie,” with its endless promotional events, pushed her even higher. Thanks to her tireless stylist Andrew Mukamal, Robbie delivered some of the decade’s standout fashion moments. The years 2023–24 were filled with modern designer tributes to historic Barbie looks, all showcased on her.
Some highlights include a black mini dress with a pink train from Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards, a black-and-pink Armani Privé look with opera gloves at the BAFTA Awards, and a red rose Balmain gown — a twist on the Barbie theme — at the Critics' Choice Awards.
There were also: an Armani homage to the 1977 Superstar Barbie in pink sequins with a matching tulle scarf, a dark cape look inspired by the 1964 “Black Magic” Barbie, and a pale pink Vivienne Westwood gown referencing the 1960 “Enchanted Evening” doll.
When the Barbie frenzy finally ended, Robbie continued appearing in Chanel, the house that, along with Calvin Klein, was among the first to cast her in campaigns and dress her for major events. Still, she embraces Prada and Schiaparelli when a romantic or dramatic look is needed, and Armani consistently brings out her very best.
The standout look of the past year, without competition, was her appearance at the London premiere of “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” in a sheer, embroidered Armani gown with a back made of nothing more than a single string. Even if the film’s title does not match its quality, it perfectly describes Robbie in that dress.
Looking ahead
In Hollywood terms, Robbie at 35 is approaching the age when roles in romantic dramas begin to thin out. For many actors, the next five years would be the final window to push for an Oscar and secure a few more significant roles before the industry funnels them into parts like the bride’s mother or the villainous mother-in-law. But Robbie has consistently shown she cannot be boxed in, and she will likely rise above the stereotypes Hollywood tries to place on her.
Applause or rotten tomatoes?
She is “Barbie with thorns,” with an angel’s face and the body of a femme fatale, managing to look elegant even when wearing little more than a thread. So the answer, without hesitation, is applause — and plenty of it.
