It is commonly thought that the world belongs to the young. Lately, I have begun to think that is nonsense and that the world belongs to older people. The young suffer, the older ones enjoy. The young are preoccupied with questions: What will become of me? Where is my life headed? Will the complete nobody I met at the bar yesterday text me? When I recall the torment that defined my 20s, for example, I shudder. Older people, by contrast, are not tormented. They are granted a priceless gift: peace of mind.
Take 76-year-old Meryl Streep. She is currently at her peak, with the highly anticipated sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada” (set to hit screens April 30). For those who may have forgotten, in the 2006 film Streep played Miranda, a character modeled after Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who torments her personal assistant Andy, played by Anne Hathaway. Am I in a rush to watch a sequel that revisits toxic workplace dynamics from 20 years ago? Not particularly. The film’s promotional tour, however — in which Streep and Hathaway are meeting fans and the media around the world — is a different story altogether.

Of the two stars, my gaze is drawn to Streep every time. How striking she is, and how precise each of her looks. These dazzling outfits, put together by stylist Michaela Erlanger, were taken straight from the runways of the world’s leading fashion houses, some even designed especially for Streep, with the aim of creating a “fashion-forward energy” and presenting a “new era of fashion.” But it is not just the brands or the top designers enlisted for the task. It is Meryl — her style, elegance, charm, intellect and the way she makes these fashion moments her own. I look at her and want to be 76. In the meantime, it is worth reviewing the looks of the three-time Oscar winner and drawing some inspiration for life.
