Nicolas Cage’s Malibu mansion, which he bought just two years ago for $10.5 million, has recently gone from being a home with a massive roof to something more like a house with a basement — because it simply sank into the ground.
Where the luxury property once stood, there is now a sinkhole with the structure partially submerged in it, while the asphalt and concrete leading to the garage appear to have cracked and collapsed inward.
The city of Malibu addressed the incident on X, saying authorities were handling the situation, including a gas leak caused by the collapse, which occurred early Tuesday morning.
So far, residents in the area have not been ordered to evacuate, but according to reports, five homes have been declared off-limits.
“The city’s Building Safety Division and Southern California Gas Company will continue to assess the situation to determine any safety hazards to the surrounding area and will provide updates as they become available,” the city said.
The massive hole, estimated to measure about 30 feet by 30 feet, was apparently caused by “coastal erosion” — a process in which ocean waves, wind and human activity remove sand and rock and gradually weaken the shoreline.
The incident occurred the day after an especially rainy day in the Los Angeles area, during which huge waves affected the Southern California coastline following the development of Hurricane Marie.
Cage, who apparently was not at the property when the collapse occurred, has not commented.
The mansion was built in the 1990s and, according to reports, Cage purchased it in 2024 for $10.5 million.
And if you were worried, there is no need to start looking for alternative housing for him: In addition to the Malibu mansion, Cage owns other homes in New York and Las Vegas, where he lives with his wife and their 4-year-old daughter.
The real estate enthusiast once owned as many as 15 homes and estates at the same time, including two castles in Europe and a private island in the Bahamas, but was forced to sell most of them to cover large debts to tax authorities.
His net worth is now estimated at $40 million, so he will probably manage.
