This is why bangs are trending this winter — and how to make them work

it's that time of year again, when every woman asks herself the million-dollar question - is it time to cut my bangs or should I put down the scissors and slowly and carefully walk away

It’s no coincidence bangs are popping up this winter: temperatures are dropping and humidity is low — ideal conditions for cutting your hair (and immediately regretting, of course). “This is the most fashionable look right now,” says hair and makeup artist Yotam Makhlouf, who’s also behind the new bangs sported by social media stars Danit Greenberg and Maya Wertheimer. “Women always prefer bangs in winter. Here, Danit’s just on her way to me to trim her bangs even shorter.”

But who do bangs actually suit?
“Bangs aren’t suitable for every hair type — you want relatively thick hair, because very fine or sparse hair can clump and the bangs can become greasy quickly, which is less ideal. It also depends a lot on face shape — for long faces, for example, it’s really good because it helps round them out.”
If it doesn't suit me by definition, and I still want bangs — are there ways to make it work?
“Yes — you can play around with the style… . Less doll bangs, more curtain bangs”

What kind of bangs will be trendy this winter?
“Doll‑like bangs, like Danit’s, at about eye level with small wispy pieces. Not heavy or thick bangs, but more airy and sheer. That also fits with the ‘messy’ look that’s very in right now — less volume and bulk, more light and loose.”
How do you style hair with bangs?
“My method for perfect bangs is to dry them with a hairdryer and literally shake them to the right, then dry them to the left, and then flip them upwards. That way they get the most natural shape. You don’t need brushes. Also, I recommend rolling the bangs with a roller. After you take the roller out, the bangs stand up nicely, and then you give them a blast of warm air with the dryer and they spread out beautifully.”

What is recommended in terms of washing them?
“Wash as you normally would, just try not to put conditioner or hair mask on them, because they get greasy very fast. I recommend using dry shampoo as part of your routine.”

Do you have any advice for someone planning to cut their own bangs at home?
“I recommend not cutting bangs at home. Bangs shrink, so we never cut them to the length we want — we always leave them a bit longer. In general, I don’t recommend framing your face at home — it’s not as simple as it looks in the videos people see online.”

'I’m obsessed with them!': Danit Greenberg talks bangs

Ladies pondering the cut, we have a response from Danit Greenberg herself. This, by the way, is what real investigative journalism looks like.
“I didn’t have bangs before, but I always loved seeing them on others and thought it was the most stylish thing ever. A few months ago I was photographed for a cover story, and hair designer Ran Karisi.added bangs for me. I fell in love with the idea and ever since I knew that someday I would do it for real.”

What made you stop hesitating and decide to cut them?
“In the end, it’s just hair and it grows back, so it’s not a life‑or‑death decision. A change is always refreshing and fun, and one day I just decided I really wanted it. Yotam came to me and cut me perfect bangs, just like I wanted.”
Is it difficult for you to maintain?
“The truth is — it’s not hard at all. I just dry them to both sides, pop in a roller and that’s it.”
So you can say that you're not one of those who regrets it.
“I’m so glad I did it, because since I stopped dyeing my hair I haven’t done any refreshing change — and suddenly the bangs bring a completely different vibe and I’m obsessed with it! Hair is like the ultimate accessory to me and I even play around with it on Instagram — I built a whole different persona. I really love it. Life’s too short to overthink whether to get bangs or not. If you want them — just do it. It’s fun.”
