Singer Kelly Clarkson got a taste of what Julia Roberts, or rather the character she played in the iconic scene from "Pretty Woman", experienced.
Just as Vivian, the kindhearted sex worker, walked into an upscale clothing store and was treated condescendingly, Clarkson said she had a similar experience, which she recounted in an angry post on X.
"Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy and literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me. Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale," Clarkson wrote.
She added: "But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in 'Pretty Woman'. For sure, check it out," punctuating her sarcastic recommendation with a thumbs-down emoji.
The responses were, predictably, sympathetic to Clarkson's story, ranging from references to the film and outraged comments such as "How dare he not recognize you?" to humorous GIFs and memes. One user created an image of a protester standing outside the store holding a sign reading "We support Kelly." Another superimposed Clarkson's face onto Roberts' body in the famous scene.
Another commenter shared a humorous review that read: "I had a bad experience, they didn't treat me well, but then I came back with Richard Gere and everything got better." Someone else took the joke even further, writing: "Terrible place. They spat on me and called me 'poor' the moment I walked in."
Others took the incident more seriously and gave the store low ratings.
The store has not issued an official response. However, according to reports, it briefly posted an Instagram Story featuring a positive customer review.
"From the very first time I walked into the store, I felt welcome and received genuinely warm treatment. I love discovering unique treasures and meeting the wonderful people there. Art of Play is a place that makes you smile and want to come back. I'm already counting down the days until I return in two weeks."
The Instagram Story is no longer visible on the store's account, and the store has disabled comments.
