The great migration over Hula lake: Hundreds of thousands of birds fly over Israel

Roughly 600,000 storks, tens of thousands of pelicans and hundreds of thousands of raptors are making their way through Hula Lake on their southward journey to Africa | Watch

One of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomena is currently underway at Hula Lake Park in northern Israel: the great bird migration, as countless birds travel from Europe and northern Asia to Africa, where they will spend the winter months.
According to KKL-JNF, an estimated 600,000 white storks are expected to pass over Israel in the coming weeks. They will be joined by tens of thousands of pelicans, hundreds of thousands of birds of prey, and a wide variety of flamingos, herons, waders and songbirds.

Many species prefer to migrate during the cooler nighttime hours, and as the sun rises, the area bursts into life with sound and color.

Hula Lake is considered one of the most important stopover habitats for migratory birds in the world. For many of them, it serves as a critical rest and feeding point before they continue their long journey to Africa.
“Incredible sights like these never grow old,” said Inbar Shlomit Rubin, field manager at the KKL-JNF Hula Lake. “The birds that choose our lake as a waypoint fill the heart with pure beauty. It’s a wonderful opportunity to witness one of nature’s most breathtaking wonders up close."

To make the experience accessible to a wider audience, KKL-JNF has installed live-streaming cameras around the lake, broadcasting 24/7 on its website. Those unable to visit in person can still enjoy the stunning views from home.
