Israel is bracing for a major winter weather system this weekend, with more than 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) of rain expected in parts of central Israel on Friday and Saturday, and even higher totals possible in some areas. The Israel Meteorological Service warned Wednesday that the intensity and volume of the rainfall could cause widespread urban flooding, particularly along the coastal plain.
According to the forecast, the areas facing significant flooding risks stretch from the Sharon region through the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, the central lowlands and the Lachish region to the southern coast. A rainfall forecast map published by the Meteorological Service shows the cumulative precipitation expected through Sunday, with parts of central Israel projected to receive more than 100 millimeters (3.9 inches).

The Meteorological Service noted that while significant rainfall systems have already affected much of the Mediterranean region this season, Israel has so far been influenced mainly by weather systems arriving from the south and east. That is expected to change this weekend, when a substantial winter weather system moves into the country, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms and a sharp drop in temperatures.
Wednesday's weather will remain relatively typical for the season, with a slight drop in temperatures, mainly in mountainous and inland areas. On Thursday, temperatures will fall slightly further, with local showers expected primarily in northern Israel and along the coastal plain.
On Friday, intermittent rain is forecast across northern and central Israel, with isolated thunderstorms possible. Local showers may also reach the northern Negev. Temperatures will continue to fall, dropping below seasonal averages in most areas.
Saturday will bring further periods of rain across northern and central Israel, with local showers also expected in the northern Negev. The Meteorological Service warned of possible flooding along the coastal plain as temperatures fall further, bringing colder-than-usual conditions across much of the country.
