Israel reports over 300 new daily COVID cases for first time in months

Health Ministry says tally of seriously ill has also increased for the first time since the recent virus surge, with 5 people hospitalized on Wednesday alone; Bennett says the deadline to receive first vaccine dose is July 9 as jabs are set to expire

Israel on Thursday reported over 300 new daily coronavirus cases for the first time in months, health officials said.

  • The Health Ministry said 307 people tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, the highest the figure has been since April.

    The ministry said after 59,113 tests had been conducted, the contagion rate now stands at 0.6%.
    The number of serious patients also has seen an increase for the first time since the recent resurgence of the pathogen in Israel. At least 29 patients are now in serious condition, of whom 17 are ventilated.
    Five of the seriously ill were hospitalized on Wednesday alone, while another patient was hospitalized on Thursday morning.

    The official death toll still stands at 6,429, with the latest patient to have died from the pathogen was recorded on Wednesday of last week.
    In the wake of the infection rate increase, there has also been a spike in the number of vaccinated, especially among the teens. According to latest data, 16,268 people received their first dose of the vaccine on Wednesday and 3,180 received the booster shot.
    Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called on teens to get vaccinated, warning that the vaccines in stock are set to expire, and the deadline for receiving the first dose of the vaccine is July 9th.
