Up to 60 pounds (27 kilograms). This is the load placed on the cervical spine when the head is tilted forward at a 60-degree angle while reading WhatsApp messages or scrolling through TikTok. Think of it as the exact weight of an 8-year-old child sitting directly on the back of the neck.
This phenomenon already has an official name, and it is worrying doctors and orthopedists worldwide: Text Neck Syndrome.
At first, it feels like just a mild discomfort in the back of the neck, but without a change in habits, this constant staring down can turn into chronic, irreversible pain.
How much does the head weigh?
In a normal, upright position, the human head weighs about 10 to 12 pounds (around 5 kilograms). The cervical spine is shaped like the letter C to support this weight easily and in perfect balance.
The problem begins the moment the head tilts forward to read a text or scroll through a feed. As the bending angle sharpens, the mechanical load on the neck muscles and ligaments spikes.
Even at a 15-degree tilt, when the phone is just slightly below eye level, the load on the neck increases to 26 pounds (12 kg). The load increases as the neck bends further, reaching a point where the phone rests near the lap at about 60 degrees. At that point, the load on the neck nearly doubles, reaching about 60 pounds (27 kg), which is 5 to 8 times the original weight.
The neck muscles overstretch and struggle to handle the strain. This pathological posture affects the cervical vertebrae and the spinal discs between them.
The domino effect
The damage from this syndrome does not stop at the neck:
- Headaches and hand numbness: Tight and cramped neck muscles are a leading cause of severe headaches. Additionally, pressure on the nerves in the cervical spine can cause abnormal sensations down the arms, such as tingling, numbness and burning.
- Slouched and closed posture: To compensate for the weight pulling the head forward, the shoulders collapse inward and the upper back rounds out. The result is a slouched appearance, widespread back pain and an increased risk of developing a hunchback (kyphosis).
The TikTok generation at risk
Today's children and teenagers are at the highest risk. Because their skeletal, muscular and bone systems are still growing, the poor postural habits they adopt in front of tablets and mobile phones can turn into permanent structural deformities.
To prevent irreversible damage, parents must set clear limits on static screen time, arrange ergonomic study spaces that require sitting upright, encourage outdoor physical activity and above all, lead by example.
What can you do?
Change your hand and elbow positioning: When sitting, rest your elbows on a table or chair armrests, or cross one arm over your stomach to support the elbow of the other hand at chest height. This posture naturally raises the phone to eye level and keeps the deep muscles in the back of the neck from fatiguing. Lying on your stomach while scrolling in bed can also help keep the shoulder girdle in a healthy, upright position.
Adopt smart screen habits: Instead of bending the whole head forward to read messages or watch videos, practice keeping the head completely upright and lowering only the eyes. This keeps the neck in a safe, neutral zero-degree angle.
It is highly recommended to reduce screen time by switching to voice messages and using the voice-to-text recording feature, saving the need to stay fixed over the virtual keyboard.
In addition, increase the font size, since small text triggers an automatic instinct to bring the body closer and lower the neck to read the screen.
Smartphones are here to stay, but our skeletal structure will not change anytime soon to adapt to them. Preventative corrective movement, where every scrolling action is accompanied by active bodily awareness, will help maintain spinal health over time.
