Israel logged more than 83,000 daily COVID cases on Monday for the second straight day, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
Since January first 1,094,473 Israelis were confirmed to have been infected by COVID-19, 44% of the total of infections since February 2020.
The R factor indicating the spread of the virus in the community however, dropped somewhat and stands on 1.23.
Israel has had the highest infection rate per capita for the past seven days.
Despite the fast spreading Omicron variant and the extreme infection rate, Israelis have stayed away from vaccination sites in recent days and the rate of vaccination dropped by 72%.
On Tuesday, the panel of health experts advising the cabinet on the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, recommended administering a fourth dose of vaccines to the adult population, after preliminary study results showed that the additional jab provides 3 to 5 times more protection against severe illness and 2.5 times more protection against infections.
Hospitals report 2,256 patients who are positive for COVID-19 although some are receiving treatment for other ailments and conditions.
According to the ministry there are currently 845 patients suffering from serious complications of the virus and 117 of them are on ventilators.
After 14 people died on Monday, the death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands on 8,487. Since the start of the year, 236 people succumbed to the virus.
