Israel edges toward grim landmark of 8,000 COVID deaths

About 83% of deceased over past 30 days did not have an up-to-date vaccine; 380 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in serious condition; contagion rate remains stable at 1.7%

Israel's coronavirus outbreak is close to chalking up another horrific milestone as the country's death toll was a whisker away from the 8,000 mark, the Health Ministry reported Sunday evening.

    Ministry data show that 11 of those who passed away due to complications of COVID-19 over the past three days were unvaccinated, one received two vaccine doses over six months ago and another three have received their vaccine booster shot. One of the deceased's vaccination status was unknown. All were older than 60.
    Over the past 30 days, 453 patients have passed away — 74 were fully vaccinated, 69 have not received a booster shot and 293 were unvaccinated. The vaccination status of 17 others was unknown. All in all, more than 67% of the deceased were not vaccinated, and about 83% did not have an up-to-date vaccine.
    Meanwhile, 654 Israelis have tested positive for coronavirus out of 37,000 tests carried out since midnight, putting the country's infection rate at 1.7%.

    There were 17,975 active COVID-19 cases in the country, including 380 people hospitalized in serious condition (76% of whom were unvaccinated), down slightly from Sunday morning. Over 1.3 million infections have been confirmed in Israel since the pandemic began.
    According to the Health Ministry, over 6.2 million Israelis have received at least one vaccine dose and close to 5.7 million have gotten two shots. Additionally, more than 3.8 million have been administered a booster shot.
