Jewish groups say the Romanian Academy's plan to alter its dictionary definition of an anti-Semitic slur to make clear it is pejorative does not go far enough.
The Anti-defamation League and the Center for Monitoring and Combating Anti-Semitism have written to the Academy saying it wants it made specifically clear in its dictionary that the slur is racist and anti-Semitic.
In a letter received by the Associated Press Tuesday, the New York-based Anti-Defamation League said it hoped the Academy would accept "that the word is anti-Semitic and racist."
The center said this month the word was "heard by Jews when they were put on the trains of death," referring to the massacre of hundreds of thousands of Romanian Jews in World War II.
