Insult against rabbi widely condemned in Hungary

Government, opposition parties, several Christian churches condemn verbal attack on retired Chief Rabbi

Hungary's government, opposition parties and several Christian churches have condemned a verbal attack on a retired Chief Rabbi.
The Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities says an unidentified man insulted 89-year-old Jozsef Schweitzer near his downtown Budapest home on Tuesday, telling him "I hate all Jews."
A statement Wednesday from the Government spokesman's office said the government was doing everything possible to repress "voices incompatible with European norms."
Hungary's main Christian churches expressed their solidarity with Schweitzer and the whole Jewish community, calling the insults a "cowardly attack."
Two weeks ago, Budapest police detained two men suspected of defacing several Jewish memorials in the capital city, including a statue remembering Jews murdered during the Holocaust, when some 550,000 Hungarian Jews were killed.
