The Ashkenazi Jews joined the Sephardic communities, who started their Selichot on the second day of the month of Elul (about three weeks ago). This is the final stretch before Yom Kippur.
A special musical prayer, broastcast live on Ynet, was performed at the Ohel Nehama synagogue in the Talbiya neighborhood in Jerusalem, done in the style of the "Singing Rabbi" Shlomo Carlebach, and accompanied by instrumentation.
