A man suspected of attempting to procure weapons for an attack on Jewish targets in Germany was arrested Wednesday in Denmark, the German federal prosecutor's office said.
The suspect, identified as Tawab M. in line with German privacy rules, is an Afghan national alleged to have conspired with a Danish citizen tied to Iranian intelligence. The Danish suspect is accused of collecting information on Jewish individuals and institutions in Berlin, reportedly for the purpose of planning attacks.
According to prosecutors, in late May, Tawab M. allegedly promised an associate named Ali S. that he would obtain weapons for a third party and persuade them to carry out an attack on Jewish targets in Germany. Authorities noted that Tawab M. has a history of acquiring weapons, explosives and related equipment in Denmark.
The identity of the third person remains unknown. Ali S. was arrested in June and is facing charges in a separate legal proceeding.
German prosecutors said Tawab M. is under investigation for inciting another person to commit murder, and that an arrest warrant for him had been issued last month. He is expected to be extradited to Germany and brought before a judge, who will decide whether he remains in custody pending formal charges.
According to The New York Post, German authorities have recently increased security around Jewish and Israeli sites across the country in response to heightened threats following the 12-day war between Israel and Iran that broke out in June.
