Several suspects have since been arrested in connection with the incident. Initial assessments indicate the kidnapping was carried out for criminal motives — ransom and robbery — with no indication of a terror motive or a targeted attack against the Jewish community.
Gruzd, who also served as a program head at the South African Institute of International Affairs, was a prominent figure in South Africa’s public and academic spheres. In addition to his research work, he was a journalist with the SA Jewish Report and Radio Chai 101.9 FM.
Members of the local Johannesburg community expressed shock and deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing that it is a profound loss not only to his family and friends, but to the community as a whole.

The South African Institute of International Affairs issued a statement mourning his death: “An integral part of the Institute, Steve was known for his unwavering dedication to his work and his commitment to the policy community in Africa. We will miss his brilliant mind, his deep camaraderie, and his gentle spirit," the institute said.
"His absence leaves a significant void at SAIIA and across the continent he served so passionately. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Steve’s family, friends and all those who had the pleasure of working alongside him. May his soul rest in peace."
