Imagine… the Israel we could become

Opinion: As Israelis head to the polls, they must recognize the magnitude of this moment: a decisive, once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape their children's future. Imagine what could be, and then vote accordingly

“Imagine a beautiful world, less sad than the one we know,” sings Shlomo Artzi in one of his best-known songs. After four extraordinarily challenging years, and with the election just around the corner, we can allow ourselves to dare to imagine something better.
Imagine - a society governed by clear, agreed-upon rules, rooted in the spirit of Israel's Declaration of Independence. A constitution and a framework of shared principles that define the limits of power, enshrine individual rights and shape the public sphere.

Imagine - a country where education tops the national agenda and is managed with care, measurable goals, independence and consistency. Schools that nurture critical thinking, values and curiosity, while serving as engines of technological growth. A government that recognizes its most important investment lies in strengthening the status of teachers and nurturing the child sitting in a classroom today, who, 20 years from now, will help drive the nation's economy.
Imagine - a society where every citizen has an equal opportunity to succeed. Where the cost of living is not an unavoidable burden, where young couples can afford to buy a home, and where hard work translates into financial security rather than a never-ending struggle to survive. A government committed to narrowing social and economic gaps and strengthening communities beyond the country's center.
Imagine - a country that is truly safe. Strong in the face of its enemies, yet secure on its own streets. A country where national security and personal safety go hand in hand. Where parents are not afraid to send their children to school, and citizens feel protected in every alleyway.
Imagine - a trustworthy, high-quality and professional public service that promotes excellence, integrity and accountability, where appointments are based on merit. A country where corruption is a rare exception, and public trust in government institutions rises dramatically.
Imagine - a country where the burden of service is shared equally. Not because everyone is the same, but because everyone has a part to play, including the ultra-Orthodox and Arab communities. A society where military, national or civilian service becomes a common bond connecting different sectors and communities, building solidarity and strengthening the collective good.
Imagine - a society where fewer people judge one another by their background, religion, hometown or political beliefs. A country where racism is pushed to the margins and mutual respect returns to the center. A place where polarization gives way to dialogue, and where people can disagree passionately without descending into hatred.
Imagine - a cleaner country. Fresh air, restored rivers, greener cities, bicycle lanes and efficient public transportation that does not force us to waste our lives sitting in traffic. A country that understands environmental protection is not a luxury, but a fundamental condition for quality of life and good health.
Imagine - an Israel that once again becomes a strategic asset in the eyes of the free world. An Israel that restores its international standing, deepens partnerships and attracts investment, scientists, entrepreneurs and global companies. A government that understands national strength is measured not only in tanks and fighter jets, but also in diplomatic wisdom.
Imagine - leadership capable of charting a path forward. A reality in which Israel safeguards its security while actively shaping the conditions that will secure its future as a Jewish, democratic, safe and prosperous state for generations to come.
And imagine what could happen if all these pieces came together: accelerated economic growth, foreign investment, an outstanding education system, a united society and renewed hope. An Israel that harnesses its extraordinary human capital to once again become one of the world's most advanced, prosperous and influential nations.
These elections represent a historic crossroads, and that is precisely why the stakes are so high. The choice is between a fanatical, dark theocracy that glorifies power and turns away from universal norms, and a modern renaissance of the founding fathers' vision — establishing Israel as a model nation, admired both at home and abroad.
And so, when we step behind the voting booth curtain, we must recognize the magnitude of this moment: a decisive, once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the future of our children.
Imagine what could be, and then vote accordingly.
