NFL star Puka Nacua sparked backlash in the United States after making a hand-rubbing gesture while bending his back during a live online broadcast, a motion associated with antisemitic caricatures. On Thursday, the Los Angeles Rams wide receiver issued an apology, saying he was unaware at the time of the gesture’s meaning.
“I deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions as I do not stand for any form of racism, bigotry or hate of another group of people,” Nacua wrote. The incident occurred Tuesday during a livestream with two online streamers, Adin Ross and N3on, who suggested he perform the gesture as part of his next touchdown celebration.
The NFL said Thursday in a statement that it “strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and derogatory behavior directed towards any group or individual. The continuing rise of antisemitism must be addressed across the world, and the NFL will continue to stand with our partners in this fight. Hatred has no place in our sport or society."
The streamers attempted to enter the Rams’ training facility on Tuesday, but the team refused to grant them access. During the same livestream, Nacua also said NFL referees are “the worst,” claiming that some officials make calls primarily to get television exposure during games.
