The New York Knicks captured their first NBA championship since 1973 on Saturday night, defeating Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to clinch the series 4-1.

Jalen Brunson led New York with a historic performance, scoring 45 points — the most ever by a Knicks player in an NBA Finals game — as the team completed a comeback after trailing by as many as 16 points.
The Spurs, led by French star Victor Wembanyama, had entered the Finals with hopes of capturing the franchise's first title since 2014. Wembanyama had helped San Antonio return to contention after several rebuilding seasons and played a key role throughout the postseason.

San Antonio managed to avoid a sweep with a Game 3 victory behind a 32-point performance from Wembanyama, but New York seized control with a dramatic Game 4 comeback from a 29-point deficit before finishing the series in Texas.
The championship marks a remarkable turnaround for the Knicks under first-year coach Mike Brown and gives New York its first NBA crown in more than half a century.
