Cloudflare suffered a major disruption early Tuesday, triggering outages across popular websites and services, including X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI, Canva, and several online games. The company said it is aware of the problem and is investigating a server issue that may affect multiple customers.
The trouble began around 6 a.m. Eastern time, when Cloudflare’s support portal provider reported technical issues. Soon after, users saw widespread degradation on X and outages across major multiplayer titles such as League of Legends and Valorant, according to Downdetector reports.
Cloudflare noted that “scheduled maintenance in the SCL (Santiago) datacenter” was planned during this period, though it has not confirmed whether that maintenance is tied to the incident. By 7:03 a.m., the company said its teams were continuing to investigate the issue. Even Cloudflare’s own status page struggled to load properly, with missing CSS styling signaling deeper infrastructure problems.
“Cloudflare is aware of and investigating an issue that potentially impacts multiple customers. Further detail will be provided as more information becomes available,” the company said at 6:48 a.m. Eastern time.
Users attempting to access X, create designs on Canva, or load ChatGPT encountered generic messages such as “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed.” These errors stem from malfunctioning security systems that Cloudflare typically uses to protect websites, even though the websites themselves remain online.
OpenAI services, including ChatGPT, displayed error messages linked to the outage. Other platforms experienced partial failures. Members of our team encountered intermittent disruptions with PayPal and Uber, particularly through Uber Eats. The apps continued to load, but payments and order processing were inconsistent.
The situation remains fluid, and Cloudflare has not provided a timeline for full restoration. This story is developing.
