Many of the world’s biggest online platforms went down Monday, leaving millions of users locked out of their favorite services during a sweeping global outage.
According to tracking website Down Detector, Amazon's cloud unit AWS, Robinhood and Perplexity were just some of the services to face issues on Monday.
Amazon.com, Prime Video, Alexa, Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, ChatGPT, Airtable, Canva, PayPal's Venmo, PlayStation, Pokémon Go, Xero and even the McDonald’s app were also suffering problems.
“Perplexity is down right now,” Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said on X. “The root cause is an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it.”
The AWS status dashboard reports increased error rates and latency in the US-EAST-1 region, though outages are affecting other regions globally. AWS first reported the issue at 3:11 a.m. ET, saying it was working to mitigate the issue and determine the root cause. No timeline has been provided for full restoration.
"We can confirm significant error rates for requests made to the DynamoDB endpoint in the US-EAST-1 Region. This issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region as well. During this time, customers may be unable to create or update Support Cases," the AWS dashboard said in a statement.
"Engineers were immediately engaged and are actively working on both mitigating the issue, and fully understanding the root cause. We will continue to provide updates as we have more information to share, or by 2:00 AM.
AWS outages in the US-EAST-1 region have caused similar widespread disruptions in 2020, 2021 and 2023.
