Sleep in history, live like a local: inside Budapest’s new Wonder hotel

Opened in February on the edge of Budapest’s Jewish Quarter, Wonder combines guest rooms with an Italian restaurant, cocktail bar, spa and cultural salon designed to draw locals as well as travelers

Wonder, a new hotel in central Budapest, is trying to be more than a place for tourists to sleep. Alongside its guest rooms, the hotel operates an Italian restaurant, cocktail bar, spa and cultural space that hosts events and activities aimed at the local public as well.
The hotel opened in February and is located at 36 Király Street, on the edge of the Jewish Quarter, inside a historic protected building in the city center. In the early 20th century, the street was considered one of Budapest’s prominent commercial arteries, and it remains closely associated with the Jewish Quarter on the eastern side of the Hungarian capital, Pest, which is separated from the western side, Buda, by the Danube River.

The hotel sits between the Jewish Quarter and Andrássy Avenue, within walking distance of major city landmarks including the Hungarian State Opera House, St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Hungarian Parliament Building, the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial and the bridges connecting Pest and Buda.
The building’s link to Jewish heritage is not only a matter of location near the Jewish Quarter and the Dohány Street Synagogue. One of its former residents was Attila Petschauer, the Jewish-Hungarian Olympic champion in saber fencing who won gold medals in 1928 and 1932, as well as world titles. During World War II, he was arrested and sent to a labor camp in Ukraine, where he was murdered by a Hungarian officer who had once been his teammate on the Olympic squad. His tragic life story was among the inspirations for the Hollywood film “Sunshine.”

The hotel’s interior design is the result of a collaboration among architects, interior designers and artists from Tel Aviv, London and Budapest. Works and art collections from the 19th century are displayed throughout the building alongside contemporary pieces, combining the history of the structure with modern design. According to the hotel, all the works were personally collected by the owners.
Wonder is positioning itself as a hotel that appeals not only to tourists, but also to city residents. That approach is reflected in its spa, restaurant and bar, which are meant to attract a local crowd and turn the hotel into a meeting and leisure destination alongside its function as a place to stay.
The hotel’s Italian restaurant, Popolare, led by chef Nicola, offers a menu based on Italian cuisine. Alongside pasta, pizza, fish and salads, the menu also includes dishes with an Israeli touch, including shakshuka and “bourekas treats.” The recently opened restaurant is aimed not only at hotel guests, but also at locals. Compared with major Western European destinations, prices are relatively reasonable, and certainly compared with prices common in Israel.

A different atmosphere: the entrance to Popolare restaurant

Sitting in the ground-floor restaurant, it is hard to ignore the atmosphere: elegant and relaxed, shaped by its distinctive design, which includes greenery and a transparent roof that opens according to the weather, with pleasant music playing in the background. A polished bar stands in the center of the restaurant, and behind it is a semi-open kitchen from which the dishes emerge.
Unlike the familiar hotel buffet concept, meals at the restaurant are served à la carte, which allows for closer attention to the quality of the dishes and gives each diner a more personal, upscale experience. Whatever you choose, do not skip the tiramisu.
Next to the restaurant is a cocktail bar designed in a speakeasy style. On weekends, from Thursday to Saturday, DJs play sets there, giving the place a clearly social character, helped by the hotel’s location and its distinctive concept.

Here, too, the artistic element is hard to miss: bottles arranged against a beautiful stained-glass backdrop at the bar, comfortable designer armchairs, a luxurious carpet, a piano used as the base for the DJ booth, dozens of lights across the ceiling and, on the opposite side, a mural painted by an artist from Tel Aviv.
Alongside its hospitality offering, Wonder also operates a cultural space called The Salon, which hosts lectures, workshops, demonstrations and gatherings open to the public. Through these activities, the hotel aims to draw not only guests but also Budapest residents. Among the events are stargazing evenings on the rooftop, which overlooks central Budapest and the dome of St. Stephen’s Basilica. The roof also includes a bar and seating areas.
The hotel’s wellness complex, La Pausa, combines traditional spa facilities with areas designed for gathering and lingering. The complex includes a Finnish sauna, Turkish hammam, hot tub, cold plunge pool, treatment rooms and rest areas, alongside an internal bar and seating corners.

At the entrance to the complex, guests receive a robe, towel and slippers, and electronic lockers are available for storing personal belongings. In addition to the facilities, the spa offers various treatments and massages, including sports massage and massages using local oils. A separate relaxation area is located between the sauna and shower area and the internal bar.
The guest rooms continue the design language of the public spaces. The minibar is included in the room price, along with coffee and tea, toiletries by the French brand L’Occitane and smart televisions with access to services such as Netflix and YouTube. Lighting and air conditioning are controlled by touch panels, and the rooms also include automatic night lighting beside the bed.

During the visit, the polite service by hotel staff stood out, from reception to the restaurant and housekeeping. Hotel guests also receive access at no extra cost to a gym and swimming complex covering about 2,000 square meters, located roughly 200 meters from the hotel.
Wonder tries to offer guests a little more than a standard overnight stay. Alongside the rooms, it operates a restaurant, bar, wellness complex and cultural space, to attract residents as well as tourists. It is a model that has become more common in recent years among lifestyle hotels in major European cities, which seek to combine accommodation with culture and leisure.

During a visit to the city, it is also worth setting aside time for Budapest’s western side, Buda. The area includes some of the city’s most prominent sites, among them Castle Hill, Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion, which overlooks the Danube and the eastern part of the city. From there, visitors can continue to Buda Castle and Gellért Hill, which offers views of the city and the bridges connecting Buda and Pest.
On the eastern side, Pest, visitors can also stop at City Park, Heroes’ Square and the Széchenyi thermal baths. Public transportation in the city is relatively convenient, and bus and metro stations are within walking distance of the hotel.
Prices at Wonder start at 835 shekels per night (about $240) for a standard double room. Breakfast is offered for an additional 92 shekels (about $30) per person. An enlarged double room starts at 867 shekels (about $300) per night, while a twin room with two separate beds starts at 963 shekels (about $329) per night. A two-bedroom suite suitable for up to four guests starts at 1,252 shekels (about $429) per night.
