Israeli hospital head saves passenger on Miami flight

Hadassah Medical Center Director-General Professor Yoram Weiss says he provided emergency medical care when crew noticed a medical emergency that turned out to be a heart attack

El Al passengers and crew on a flight to Miami on Thursday noticed a passenger suffering from a severe medical emergency. Fortunately, Hadassah Medical Center Director-General Professor Yoram Weiss was on board and immediately provided emergency medical care, identifying the incident as a heart attack.
"Professor Weiss administered oxygen, provided medication and coordinated an emergency landing in Athens to transfer the passenger to a local hospital for treatment and observation," a Hadassah Medical Center spokesperson said in a statement. "The passengers applauded in appreciation."

"I did what any doctor would do in such a situation," said Weiss, an intensive care and anesthesia specialist, who was en route to a fundraising mission in the U.S. "We are doctors at all times, inside and outside the hospital. Our instinct to save lives is ingrained in us — on land or in the air."

After the emergency landing in Athens, the flight continued as planned to Miami.
