A Pentagon Inspector General report states that the 2024 U.S. humanitarian aid mission to Gaza, centered around constructing a maritime pier for humanitarian aid delivery, proved significantly more expensive and dangerous than anticipated. According to the report, 62 soldiers were injured, equipment worth tens of millions of dollars was damaged, and one American soldier died. The report further indicates that the operation, costing approximately $230 million, was only active for about 20 days and 'failed to achieve its objective' - the floating facilities broke apart in the waves, ships ran aground, and forces were not prepared to operate in local conditions.
