Godspeed to Israel's new government

Opinion: The new cabinet is probably as far as can be from what most Israelis imagined when they went to the polls, to the dissatisfaction of many, but it is far preferable to the alternative of hate and divisiveness

To say that most Israelis are not satisfied with the incoming government is an understatement.

  • Bloated, wasteful, no clear ideology and a strong case of backroom politics and ego-stroking has led many critics to believe that such a project would not even make it out of the planning phase, that it was all just smoke and mirrors.

Blue & White chief Benny Gantz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signing the coalition deal
This new coalition comes after a prolonged period of abusive, divisive and hurtful rhetoric within the public sphere, with no one left innocent.
All issues were set aside, not deserving even a minute of proper discussion, all focusing on the question of "yes Netanyahu or no Netanyahu". Not even the American peace plan received any proper debate on its contents.
The heart of the matter is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with his camp contributing in no small part to the violent rhetoric with some of the most toxic and hateful statements ever uttered.
Netanyahu could have attempted to shrug it off and say, "it's not me," but it did not really matter in the end to either his supporters or critics, with each side in turn adding more fuel to the fire.

It is hard to forgive and forget, but we must press on and attempt to begin a new chapter. There is a country that is dear to us all that needs to be run.
Serious public debate should be held without blind hatred and sycophancy, and political rivals should think beyond their own personal ambition of defeating one another.
And before they begin talking, they should remember First Sgt. Amit Ben Yigal, the young soldier killed near Jenin on Monday, and all his comrades.
Incitement and hate are what birthed his killers. Do we want the same thing happening to us?

The main structural issue with Israel's governments over the past two decades has been succumbing to pressure groups, and this new administration is no different.
The majority wants equal social responsibility and benefits for all, but they get none.
They want a fair treatment in religious and state issues, but they get none.
They want a small and efficient government, but they get none.
The "coalition demands" distort the nature of the final cabinet more and more. Instead of Majoritarianism, they get Minorityism.
Despite this, the new government deserves our good luck wishes. The tasks facing them are vast and enormous, beginning with the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus epidemic, the worst in the country's history.
May fortune favor this administration, not because it is so wonderful, but because the alternative - tiring and endless hatred and divisiveness - is far worse.
