The California State Assembly passed by an overwhelming majority a bill establishing 30-meter buffer zones around entrances and exits of houses of worship where protests would be prohibited. The legislation, which will now move to a state Senate vote, comes immediately after a similar move in New York State, where a bill was passed this week establishing a 15-meter buffer zone around religious institutions following protests outside synagogues. David Bocarsly, CEO of Jewish California, said the vote was "a powerful statement that California stands with every person of faith and their constitutional right to worship. Members of the Jewish community are already forced to pass through metal detectors and armed security just to enter a synagogue. This is not normal and it should not be this way."
