Canada to resume funding to UNRWA

Canada is planning to resume funding to the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, weeks after pausing donations over Israeli allegations that 12 of the agency's staff were involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks. The federal government plans to go ahead with a scheduled $18.5 million payment in April and announce new funding, CBC reported, citing an unnamed government official. If confirmed, Canada could be among the first countries to unfreeze funding for the agency that employs 13,000 people in Gaza to run schools, health care clinics and other social services, and to distribute humanitarian aid. None of the 16 countries that paused a total of $450 million in funding to UNRWA had reversed their decision yet, UNRWA director of communications Juliette Touma told Reuters earlier on Wednesday.
