Israeli hostage Itzik Elgarat confirmed killed in Gaza captivity

Kibbutz Nir Oz announced Thursday morning that Itzik Elgarat, who was abducted on Oct. 7, was killed in Hamas captivity. His body was returned to Israel overnight as part of the first phase of the hostage deal.
Elgarat, 68 at the time of his abduction, moved to Nir Oz to join his brother Danny and became a beloved member of the community. He served for years as the kibbutz's groundskeeper and infrastructure manager.
"He was an integral part of our social fabric, known for his love of soccer, backgammon and bringing people together," the kibbutz said in a statement. We will remember him for his laughter, his big heart and his willingness to help anyone in need."
Elgarat is survived by two children, a brother and two sisters.
