Northwestern University President, Professor Michael Schill, announced his resignation following months of political pressure and struggles over his handling of antisemitism on campus. Schill faced consistent criticism from Republican lawmakers who claimed he failed to adequately protect Jewish students during protests related to the Gaza war, as well as from Jewish organizations that called for his resignation. Meanwhile, the Trump administration froze federal research funding worth approximately $790 million, leading to hundreds of layoffs at the university. The resignation joins a series of departures by senior officials at elite U.S. universities since 2023, against the background of allegations of discrimination against Jewish students and increasing pressure from the Republican administration.
