The U.S. Department of Justice has opened an investigation into Andrew Cuomo, the leading candidate for New York City mayor, on suspicion of giving false testimony to Congress about his conduct as governor during the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York Times reports. The investigation was launched a month after the administration ordered the dismissal of charges against his race rival, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams. His spokesman claimed this was political interference by President Donald Trump, as the investigation is being led by Judge Jeanine Pirro, until recently a Fox News commentator - who lost to Cuomo in the 2006 New York Attorney General election and has since been considered his political rival.
