New York elections: Mamdani leads Cuomo by 8% after 80% of votes counted

Zohran Mamdani opened an 8% lead over Andrew Cuomo in the first release of votes in the New York City mayoral race, with about 44% of votes compared to 36% for Cuomo – out of more than 900,000 votes already counted, most of them early and mail-in ballots. So far, about 80% of the votes have been counted. It may take days until a final decision is reached – as in the city's ranked-choice voting system, the full count is expected to continue until July 1. In the race for the City Council in Brooklyn's 39th district, Muslim Shahana Hanif retained her seat and defeated Israeli-American Mia Kornberg, who received widespread support from the local Jewish community and conservative media.
