Financial service provider Citigroup pressed Akshay Singal, head of its short-term interest rate trading desk in London, to remove a social media post criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza and highlighting widespread hunger in the region.
Singal posted images of malnourished children on Thursday, and by the end of the day, the bank demanded its removal and launched an investigation, according to a Bloomberg report. Singal wrote on LinkedIn, “Until now, I’ve kept most of my thoughts to private channels. But that’s not enough.
What’s happening demands our attention, and our voice.” He described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide,” adding, “Israel’s ongoing destruction of Gaza and killing of Palestinians is horrific and unacceptable.” He concluded, “Silence isn’t neutrality. It’s complicity.”

“We are aware of a social media post made by one of our employees that is inconsistent with our code of conduct. The post has been removed and we are reviewing the matter,” A Citigroup spokesperson said in a statement.
Singal assumed his role in March 2024. His previous LinkedIn post praised Citigroup’s culture and support for employees, announcing his six-month paternity leave.
