Dave Chappelle has reignited controversy with a series of pointed and highly charged remarks about Israel in a surprise new Netflix comedy special, drawing sharp reactions online and adding to an already polarizing global debate.
In the special, filmed in Washington in October, Chappelle said his greatest fear is being “co-opted”, warning the audience that if he ever publicly expresses support for Israel, it should be taken as a sign that he has been compromised.
“The fear I have that I need you to protect me from is co-option,” Chappelle said. “What if they make me say the things they want me to say? So just in case we need a code. If I say it you know they got me, and don’t listen to nothing I say after. The code is: I stand with Israel.”
The line quickly circulated on social media, with critics accusing the comedian of framing support for Israel as inherently illegitimate or coerced. Supporters, meanwhile, defended the comment as part of Chappelle’s broader critique of power, influence and free speech.
Chappelle also made explicit anti-Israel remarks while responding to criticism from fellow comedian Bill Maher over his decision to perform at a comedy festival in Saudi Arabia. Addressing human rights concerns raised by Maher, Chappelle referenced Israel while discussing the killing of journalists.
“They said, ‘Well, Saudi Arabia killed a journalist’ — and rest in peace, Jamal Khashoggi,” Chappelle said. “I’m sorry that he got murdered in such a heinous fashion. And look bro, Israel’s killed 240 journalists in the last three months so I didn’t know y’all was still counting.”
The remark drew widespread backlash, with critics disputing the figure and accusing Chappelle of echoing inflammatory claims at a time of heightened tensions following the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel and the war in Gaza.
Chappelle framed his comments as part of a broader defense of performing in Saudi Arabia, saying he felt no guilt over the decision despite criticism linked to the kingdom’s human rights record.
The special continues Chappelle’s pattern of provocative commentary on global politics, free speech and cultural power. While his supporters praise his willingness to confront taboo subjects, others argue that his remarks about Israel blur the line between satire and political messaging, particularly given their timing and tone.
As with many of Chappelle’s recent performances, the reaction has been deeply divided, reinforcing his position as one of comedy’s most influential and controversial voices.
