Stormy weather ahead: temperatures drop as rain intensifies, continues through weekend

17 mm of rain recorded in the southern Dead Sea region as flood risks rise today and over the weekend; temperatures set to drop, with showers spreading nationwide by afternoon and colder conditions expected tomorrow

Yesterday morning’s heatwave already feels like distant history as a prolonged rainy spell takes hold. Today (Thursday), cooling will continue with a marked drop in temperatures and rising humidity.
The rainfall standout over the past day was Sodom, in the Dead Sea region — one of the driest areas in the country — where 17 mm were recorded. Mitzpe Ramon and Paran in the Arava each saw 6 mm, and light rain also fell in Eilat. Safed recorded 15 mm, Tiberias 9 mm, Jerusalem just under 3 mm and Tel Aviv less than 1 mm.

In the morning, local showers accompanied by isolated thunderstorms are expected, mainly in the north and east. From midday, rain will intensify and spread back to the center and the Negev, with a risk of flooding in the Judean Desert and Dead Sea streams. Gusty winds will blow across most regions, with possible haze in the south. Overnight, intermittent rain and thunderstorms are expected from the north to the northern Negev, with continued flood concerns in the Judean Desert and Dead Sea area.
On Friday, skies will be partly to mostly cloudy. Intermittent rain is expected in the north, with a chance of local showers in the center until midday. Winds will remain brisk across much of the country. Temperatures will drop further — especially in the mountains and inland areas — falling slightly below seasonal averages. Rain is expected to resume in the center and the Negev overnight.
On Saturday, local showers are forecast across most of the country, with a risk of flooding in the Negev, Arava and the Judean Desert and Dead Sea streams. Strong winds are expected in the south, along with possible haze. Temperatures will dip slightly further and remain below average. On Sunday, occasional rain is expected in the north and center, with a chance of light rain in the south.
