The incident took place at about 1:15 p.m. near platform 8, the police said. The group, all dressed in ultra‑Orthodox garb, were waiting for a train when the attacker noticed them, shouted antisemitic insults and then violently attacked one of them. Other passengers intervened to try to protect the victim.
Railway police who were nearby arrived quickly, subdued the attacker and arrested him. The Italian police announced he will be prosecuted for “assault in aggravated circumstances on racial, ethnic and religious grounds.”
The victim was taken to hospital in stable condition. According to reports, the suspect had arrived in the city by train shortly before the assault and apparently had no prior acquaintance with the victims.
