Thai authorities arrested an Israeli couple Wednesday on the resort island of Koh Phangan after they were filmed having sex in broad daylight at a popular waterfall, prompting outrage among locals and tourists.
The video, taken at Wang Sai Waterfall in the island’s northwest, was shared widely on social media and drew angry reactions, with many expressing concern that the incident could damage Thailand’s reputation as a tourist destination, according to the Thai news site The Thaiger.
Koh Phangan district chief Suriya Bunphon ordered police to locate the couple after the footage circulated online. Authorities later found them staying at a guesthouse in Village No. 7.
Police and immigration officers arrested the two at their accommodation and took them to the local immigration office for questioning. Officials said the couple admitted to the act and were transferred to a police station, where they face legal proceedings on charges of committing an indecent act in public.
Thai police officials quoted by The Thaiger said the behavior violated Thai law, disrespected local customs and harmed the image of the country’s natural attractions.
Wang Sai Waterfall, located near Haad Yao Beach, is one of Koh Phangan’s most popular natural sites. Surrounded by tropical jungle, it features small natural pools where visitors often swim during the day. The area is known for short nature hikes and scenic photography among palm trees and smooth rocks.
