Antisemitism backed by foreign governments surged in 2024, Diaspora Ministry report finds

Government report warns that antisemitism evolved into a coordinated global movement during 2024, fueled by state-backed rhetoric, social media platforms like TikTok and academic hostility after October 7; Columbia University named most antisemitic U.S. campus in 2024

Antisemitism evolved into an organized movement in 2024, backed by official bodies, international institutions and even governments,” a new report by Israel's Diaspora and Combating Antisemitism Ministry detailed on Monday. The annual review, presented to the cabinet, is the first full-year assessment since the October 7 Hamas massacre.
The report documents a sharp global rise in antisemitic incidents following the Hamas attack. In Canada, cases jumped 670%, in Australia 320% (with a 260% rise in physical assaults) and 200% in the U.S. Roughly 64% of French citizens said Jewish fears of living in the country are justified, 80% of German Jews felt less safe and 90% of British Jews avoided city centers during anti-Israel protests.

Spain and Ireland were singled out as Europe’s worst offenders, while France, the UK, Canada and Australia were placed in what the report called a “zone of moral ambiguity” — countries that officially combat antisemitism while simultaneously fueling disproportionate criticism of Israel, which endangers local Jewish communities, according to the report.
French President Emmanuel Macron was harshly criticized for remarks about Israel “killing babies and women,” which the report claims legitimizes antisemitic rhetoric from France’s far-left.
It accuses Macron of empowering leftist leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, who downplayed antisemitism in France and challenged Interior Ministry data showing a 300% surge in incidents in early 2024.
In the UK, the country’s chief rabbi condemned the Labour-led arms embargo on Israel as “a boost to our shared enemies.” In Canada, the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) expressed “shock and distress” over Justin Trudeau's former government’s December 2023 UN vote condemning Israel — just two months after the Hamas massacre.

CIJA warned the vote would inevitably fuel antisemitic hatred at home. Canada ultimately recorded a 7.5-fold increase in antisemitic incidents in 2024, earning the dubious title of the year’s global leader in antisemitism. A reported 85% of Canadian Jews felt the Trudeau government failed to adequately address the problem.
The report also criticized the UN and the Palestinian Authority, while calling out TikTok as a major driver of online antisemitism. A former senior TikTok Israel executive who resigned last year called the platform “a threat to Israel’s existence,” claiming some ad policy managers expressed support for Hamas and the Houthis.

In academia, Columbia University in New York was named the most antisemitic U.S. campus in 2024, with 127 reported incidents. Nearly 90% of antisemitic cases across campuses in September were linked to far-left ideology, the report said.
The BBC also came under fire for refusing to label Hamas operatives as “terrorists.” A former BBC employee accused the network of covering up internal complaints about antisemitism. Jewish community leaders in the UK blamed the broadcaster for fueling global antisemitism and enabling denial or minimization of Hamas atrocities on October 7.

The report calls on governments to adopt and enforce the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism and to crack down on anti-Jewish hate. It also urged action against government inaction and one-sided criticism of Israel that threatens Jewish communities worldwide.
“These shocking figures highlight the ongoing failure of many international institutions and Western governments,” Diaspora and Combating Antisemitism Minister Amichai Chikli said.
“Israel will not hesitate to call out those who enable antisemitism — be they governments, universities or social media companies. We will continue to fight antisemitism with strength, without fear and without concessions.”
