The Education Ministry is planning a new initiative that would require schools to report students’ behavior and academic habits on a daily basis, according to a report Tuesday by public broadcaster Kan.
The plan, expected to take effect in the next school year, would significantly expand the scope of data collected by the ministry. Until now, schools have primarily reported student absences.
Under the proposed system, school principals would be required to submit additional information, including notes on classroom behavior such as disruptions and failure to complete homework, as well as students’ exam grades, Kan reported.
The initiative has raised questions among educators about how the data will be used and who will have access to it.
A deputy principal at a school questioned whether the policy could lead to direct intervention in students’ day-to-day academic responsibilities, asking whether the education minister would act against those who do not complete homework, according to Kan.
