The three Israeli hostages freed Saturday after 491 days in Hamas captivity are suffering from severe malnutrition and significant weight loss, said Dr. Hagar Mizrahi, head of the Medical Division at the Health Ministry, describing their condition as a stark illustration of the hardships they endured.
"They are home," Mizrahi said in the first update on the medical condition of the three hostages—Ohad Ben Ami, Eli Sharabi and Or Levy. "They have returned after 491 days in which their basic right to live freely was taken from them."

Mizrahi described severe malnutrition and significant weight loss among the hostages, calling the images from their release "difficult to watch." "This morning, we witnessed signs of extreme malnutrition—a stark illustration of the hell they endured," she said.
Despite their physical condition, Mizrahi noted the resilience of the former captives, saying: "We were moved to see them walk upright, with heads held high, even as they passed through a crowd of armed Hamas terrorists."
The three freed hostages are now reunited with their families at Israeli hospitals, where they are undergoing medical evaluations and treatment. "Their strength gives us great hope for their recovery and rehabilitation," Mizrahi said.
Earlier, Israeli officials condemned the harsh conditions and treatment of the three hostages, after footage showed them appearing frail and pale, being led onto a stage by armed terrorists in a public ceremony in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza before being handed over to the Red Cross.

Brig. Gen. (res.) Gal Hirsch, Israel’s coordinator for missing and captive persons, said the "disturbing images" from their release will not go unanswered. "Israel takes Hamas' repeated violations of the agreement very seriously, and appropriate actions will be taken," Hirsch said, adding that the message had been conveyed to mediators.
"The shocking sights we witnessed today touch us all and add to the painful memory of October 7, 2023," Hirsch said. "Israel views these repeated violations by Hamas with the utmost severity, particularly the condition of the three hostages released today. Together with their families, we embrace Ohad, Eli and Or. We have prepared for their return and will assist in their recovery and rehabilitation after their prolonged and painful captivity."
