Kosher food at 40,000 feet: El Al inaugurates world's largest kosher airline food plant

What's the deal with airline food? The plant will be able to produce approximately 50,000 meals a day and will broaden the variety of meals served on flights

El Al inaugurated a new aviation catering facility at Ben Gurion Airport operated by Tamam (Aircraft Food Industries), which the airline says is the world’s largest kosher aviation food plant of its kind.
The new facility opened on Wednesday spans about 14,000 square meters, nearly twice the size of the previous plant, and has the capacity to produce about 50,000 meals a day, compared with about 30,000 at the old site.

The plant was built at an investment of hundreds of millions of shekels and includes technological systems for managing food preparation processes and quality control, according to El Al. The company said the new facility will allow it to expand operations and broaden the variety of meals served on flights, with the full transition expected to take place gradually over the coming months.
The airline said the new plant replaces a decades-old facility and is part of El Al’s ongoing investment in infrastructure and upgrading the passenger service experience.

“We continue to invest consistently and significantly in improving the flight experience, understanding that every component of the customer journey is part of the overall experience," said El Al CEO Levi Halevi. "TAMAM's new plant allows us to raise the culinary standard for El Al passengers, expand operational capabilities and support El Al's growth for years to come."
Kenny Rozenberg, one of El Al’s controlling shareholders, added: “The inauguration of the world’s largest kosher food plant is a significant moment for us, as an Israeli company and as people who believe in El Al’s ability to continue leading. This investment reflects deep confidence in the company and its people, and strengthens our commitment to continued growth and development. The new plant will make it possible to provide kosher food at the highest level to the international market as well.”
